Rubenza cosmos seeds - cosmos bipinnatus
A gorgeous, boldly coloured red cosmos. When used for flower pounding the purity prints as dark blue and purple.
Dark and lovely red blooms fade to softer dark pinks if left on the plant. Nectar-rich flowers attract beneficial insects, and cut blooms last well in bouquets.
Cosmos are not a traditional dye plant, and only have moderate colourfastness, so they are not recommended for an heirloom item such as a quilt, but are a great choice for experimenting with flower pounding.
Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed and soil is warm. Several sewings can give you continuous blooms. Plant in a sunny location. Grows well in regular soil, needs little care. Can grow to up to a metre tall, so place behind shorter plants. Dead head often to make way for new blooms.
