Backyard dye garden, 174 Victor Ave
In this day long class, we will coax colour from fresh leaf Japanese Indigo (persicaria tinctoria) that has been grown in my backyard dye garden in Toronto. Dyeing with fresh leaf indigo is an entirely different process than dyeing with powdered indigo extract. We will look at three methods of using fresh indigo, the ice bath, the salt rub and tataki-zome.
All materials and supplies will be provided and each student will leave with many dyed samples, as well as a silk scarf which you have dyed yourself with fresh indigo.
The blues conjured with fresh leaf indigo are soft and subtle and slightly different, gorgeous shades of robin's egg and baby blue.
Previous experience with indigo vat dyeing (not fresh leaf) is useful, but not mandatory
Please note that this class will be held OUTDOORS in the backyard at my home dye studio. Students will have access to the bathroom and kitchen, but we will be spending the entire class outside, (light) rain or shine. In the case of heavy rain or extreme weather, the class will be rescheduled.
