Orange Cosmos seeds - cosmos sulphureus
Cheerful orange blooms. Flowers are more compact and compound than bipinnatus varieties. Cosmos are a favourite plant for tatikizome (direct printing by flower pounding) and these flowers yield shades of yellow and orange.
Cosmos last well cut for bouquets, and attract bees, birds and butterflies.
Cosmos are not a traditional dye plant, and only have moderate colourfastness, so they are not recommended for an heirloom item such as a quilt, but are a great choice for experimenting with flower pounding.
Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed and soil is warm. Several sewings can give you continuous blooms. Plant in a sunny location. Grows well in regular soil, needs little care. Can grow to up to a metre tall, so place behind shorter plants. Dead head often to make way for new blooms.
