Xanthos cosmos seeds - cosmos bipinnatus
A relatively new type of cosmos, the xanthos variety is a bright, but still soft yellow. When used for tatakizome or flower pounding, it yeilds stunning shades of bright yellow and green.
Feathery and tall, will bring the bees and birds to your garden.
Cosmos are not a traditional dye plant, and only have moderate colourfastness, so they are not recommended for an heirloom item such as a quilt, but are a great choice for experimenting with flower pounding.
Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed and soil is warm. Several sewings can give you continuous blooms. Plant in a sunny location. Grows well in regular soil, needs little care. Can grow to up to a metre tall, so place behind shorter plants. Dead head often to make way for new blooms.
