Grow your own dye garden!

Indigofera tinctoria is a plant from the bean family, and can fairly easily be grown from seed.  It requires a long growing season, so for colder climates (such as Canada) it can be best to grow in containers.  But it can also be transplanted into the ground if begun early enough.  Leaves can be used fresh or dried to create soft blue shades.  A delight to grow, as the leaves are green (and flowers pink!) but the blue appears in surprising ways - a crease in a leaf will appear blue, and little blue droplets may appear on the ground or patio around the plant after a rain.

To grow in the ground, begin indoors 4-8 weeks before outdoor planting time.  Potted plants may be begun anytime.

Coreopsis tinctoria is a species from the aster family that is native to North America, and is also known as tickseed.  The cheery flowers of this easy to grow annual not only attract birds and butterflies, but can be used as a source of yellow, orange and red dye.

May be direct seeded after frost, or begun indoors a month before planting.
