This technique only works with indigo, since clay paste is soluble in water and would wash off in other dye baths, but the unique qualities of the indigo vat mean that the clay holds up in the vat. When you are finished dyeing, you simply wash off the paste and reveal your design.

The paste can be used on any fabric made of natural fibres, such as cotton, linen, wool, silk, etc. We recommend using fabric without too much texture, and that you begin by using smaller pieces of fabric, rather than one large. Coloured or previously dyed fabric works as well. If your fabric is yellow, for example, it will remain yellow where you apply the paste, and will become green where it mixes with the blue from the indigo vat.

The quantity of fabric you can print and dye will depend on your design - if your design has a lot of "white space" or areas that will be resist printed, the paste will get used up quickly. it is an especially good dye to use for experiments with solar dyeing.

It also produces gorgeous showy red blooms that are stunning both in the garden and as cut flowers. Many people grow amaranth as a simple ornamental plant.

The other great reason to grow amaranth is that it is edible - the leaves are tangy and delicious, and can be eaten raw in salads and also cooked. The seeds can also be eaten, they are often used as a grain replacement, or popped like popcorn. Perhaps the most fun - red amaranth can be used as a natural food dye, and was traditionally used to colour the traditional Hopi piki bread.

Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed. Plant in a sunny location and keep well watered. Likes warm soil and lots of sunlight.

Annual

Zones 5-11

When to sow: spring

Ease of germination: easy

Family: Amaranthaceae

Colourfastness: Poor

This listing is for a packet of seeds containing around 75 seeds.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Buy our bundle of 9 dye garden seeds and save 25%:

https://www.juliesinden.com/products/grow-your-own-dye-garden-bundle-of-nine-seed-packets

PLEASE NOTE: The "Flat Rate Regular Mail (no tracking)" price DOES NOT include tracking. If you need tracking, you must upgrade to "Tracked Shipping" at the checkout.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is a flowering plant most commonly cultivated for it's cooking oil, the petals of which can be used to create vibrant shades of pink, coral and yellow.

A fascinating and unusual dyestuff that has been used in Japan since the 1st century, safflower is dyed in a very different way than other natural dyes. It will yield yellow and pink shades on cotton or linen, and pink, coral and yellow shades on silk. Wool will not dye. Safflower does not require the use of a mordant, and is dyed through a series of cold water soakings and "turning" the dye bath by shifting the pH first to slightly basic, then slightly acidic.

Find a step by step tutorial on dyeing with safflower here.

Since it is so lightweight, it needs to be dyed at a fairly high ratio of petals to fibre, usually 100-200% wof for medium depth of shade.

As safflower is dyed with cold water, it can be a good option for simple shibori techniques, such as the heart and circle pattern in the fifth photo.

Looking for things to dye?
